Black Excellence

Dripping with melanin like a waterfall,

Is this magnificence that is my skin,

Thick are its layers as is my soul,

The verticality of my hair matches my values,

The deep beauty that is my eye colour,

Marries the earth on which I stand.

Welcome to planet earth, where the inhabitants tend to put value on a life depending on the social, economic and educational status of the life’s owner (the person). What a wonderful world where we regard the other as useless because their ‘miserable’ positions are not on par with those we occupy!

One of the problems facing our communities right now is the inadequacy in understanding and accepting the binarism of life. Things are always different (I choose not to use the word opposite) from each other and that is normal; that is how the universe is, and there is no problem with that.

One has to be poor for the other to be rich. One has to be educated for the other to be uneducated. One has to be the general manager for the other to be a cleaner. For my shoe to be repaired, I need a cobbler. This clearly shows that we all are different. For you to be who you are, I have to be who I am.

“In this age, what the human race does not need or miss is a person who disregards the importance of others based on feeble grounds.”

They diligently crown you with a Bible of juicy names,

Deceivingly flooding you with relentless eulogies,

Their words, in companionship with their sedulous smirks,

Channel into your heart, awakening gaeity and pride…

A 4-line excerpt from the first stanza of the longest poem I’ve ever penned! I’ll post the whole poem later.

That’s it, really.

The Blue Sky Tag

A huge ‘thank you’ to Sanchali for considering me for this tag here! This is my first tag so I’m very excited like an ant on the mouth of a cup of honey.

However, I’ll keep it simple so…here we go!

  1. Give 11 questions
  2. Tag 11 people
  3. Answer the 11 questions given to you

Answers To Sanchali’s Questions

• How do you describe yourself?

I’m an open person. I try to be as honest as possible. I keep my circle small. I love going out, a lot. I laugh a lot. I forgive easily if I sense some honesty in a person. I cut off people quickly. I have some trust issues. I love to be childish in company of close friends and my family. I love the current version of Victor and couldn’t ask for anything. I take time to look good. I say how I feel. Can go on and on but that’s it. Oh, and I have a good memory.

• Are you scared of heights?

• If you could be an animal what animal would you be?

•  What places have you travelled and want to travel ?

Guess this is about ‘going abroad’…a thing I’ve never done but plan to start doing once I finish my college education this year. And Detroit is my current travel aspiration.

• What is your overall goal in life?

To inspire and motivate people through the life I live.

• Would you like to be famous?

Yes! Lol.

• What natural disaster are you mostly scared of?

I’m not, maybe because I’ve never witnessed any.

• Have you had a paranormal life experience if yes what?

Not one I recall of.

• Are you a dog person or a cat person?

Both. My love for both animals is great.

• Are you an introvert or an extrovert?

• Favorite quote?

“You ain’t a loser till you say it to yourself”

Answers To PoetryLover

1. Who do you admire most?

  • In everything, I admire my late mother, I don’t do hyperboles in matters like these, she was an angel and that’s how I speak of her, quite missed by a lot for all the good things she did, words are superfluous, RIP.
  • Intellectually, Toni Morrison, her whole work is a darling! She amazingly inspires me.

2. What’s your favorite song?

  • I’m a music junkie! There’s a long list of songs I regard as my favorites such that mentioning one is tough, however, I’ll give you Louis Armstrong’s ‘What A Wonderful World’ and Selah Sue’s ‘This World’ since I’ve been abusing them very much lately.

3. When and how did you start blogging?

  • 12 January, 2017.
  • Can’t really specify how but I’ve been writing for quite some years although I’ve been only very active from 2016. I just wanted a platform which could make me want to write often so blogging was the way as it’s required for me to write often. Also, I wanted to share my writing passion so yeah…that triggered it! That’s how I’m here.

4. Funniest moment in your life?

  • This is just a grain of them, they are many! In secondary school, when English and Drama Club girls from a certain school paid us a visit (ours was a single-sex school), my friends lured me into stepping onto the stage to do a short stand-up comedy competition, they found me hilarious and confident (and hey, I am 😜)…so I went up there but all the jokes flew off the window once I got hold of the microphone! It wasn’t that I was scared but I just…zoned out lol. This failure always makes me laugh.

5. How does it feel to be in love?

  • Amazing! Fantastic! Being in love is great y’all! I have a post I want to do on this so I’ll reserve the words, hang around. Just know, it’s totally great!

My Questions To The Nominees

  1. Do you have major project you’re working on? If yes, mind saying what?
  2. What kind of movies do you like? Any recommendation?
  3. What social network(s) do you love to use?
  4. Have you ever had any moment that surely showed you your uniqueness?
  5. How do you love to sleep? Naked or dressed? (The weird/funny one)

Once again, thank you PoetryLover for the consideration! I love the nomination…and your questions? Love them all!

That’s it, really.

  • Victor.

For The Forsaken

Made with Repix (

Lips become motionless like flies incarcerated in a spider web,

Head wrapped in a plastic bag, I thirsty for a little dose of oxygen,

To regurgitate these words and thoughts caged inside me,

Why should I be branded sacrilegious for unveiling my perspective?

This is just a teaser, I reserve the full poem ✌🏿️✌🏿✌🏿

That’s it, really.

30 Inspirational, Motivational and Feel Good Songs (Part 2)

30 Inspirational, Motivational and Feel Good Songs (Part 1)

As promised last Friday, here comes a second and final installment of my list of 30 Inspirational, Motivational and Feel Good Songs. As I did in the first piece, every song has some quoted lyrics and a few explanatory words on the song.

Here is the list:

16. Dream On – Aerosmith

“You got to lose to know how to win…/ Dream on, dream until your dreams come true”

Just from the title, the message is sent across to you. You lose? Don’t mind, learn to win from that and just keep on dreaming and working towards your dreams until they come true.

17. I Believe I Can Fly – R. Kelly

“I believe I can fly / I believe I can touch the sky / I think about it every night and day / Spread my wings and fly away”

Believe in yourself, in your dreams, in miracles. Believe that you can do anything, that if you can see yourself doing some things, you can actually do it. And that’s it, give the song a listen.

18. Stronger – Kelly Clarkson

“What doesn’t Killy you makes you stronger…/ What doesn’t kills you makes a fighter”

Quite a great song for those moments when things go sideways instead of going your way. Those problems don’t have to bring you down, fight and stand tall for ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’.

19. Ain’t No Mountain High Enough – Marvin Gaye (Ft. Tammi Terrell)

“Oh baby there ain’t no mountain high enough, / Ain’t no valley low enough, / Ain’t no river wide enough / To keep me from getting to you babe”

Whether it is a partner or just any other goal, this song fires into you the strength and determination to reach that. No matter what obstacles stand your way, if your goals are really established inside you, nothing will stop you.

20. Save The World – Swedish House Mafia

“Who’s gonna save the world tonight? / Who’s gonna bring it back to life? / We’re gonna make it, you and I / We’re gonna save the world tonight”

A song that motivates you not to just sit down and watch your life (and the entire mankind) fade away. It’s a call for you to motivate yourself and do something to bring life back to the world.

21. I Won’t Back Down – Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers

“Well I know what’s right, I got just one life / In a world that keeps on pushin’ me around / But I’ll stand my ground and I won’t back down”

This song is simple, not needing complicated and deep lyrics, but very inspiring and sweet. It gives you the strength to stand for what you believe in and fight for yourself – never backing down!

22. I Believe – R. Kelly

“When they tried to keep you down / You kept up your head / Never loosing sight / You believed in what was right / You endured to the end / Walked through the strongest wind / The storms over and a new day begins”

One of the theme songs that mouths of many black people (and other races that suffered from racism) sung after Obama was elected president. Not political though, the message in the song is that anything can happen, and you have to believe it.

30 Inspirational, Motivational and Feel Good Songs (Part 1)

From hip hop to pop, rock to soul, reggae to R&B, these songs will make you thoughtful of the human condition and its social problems. I surely believe that this list contains songs that (will) motivate you to win and inspire you to do better. Some of the songs are just feel good music that (will) get you smiling in good times and (hopefully) in your hard times. I believe that you have ever listened to some or even all of them, and your favourite(s) might be here too. So without much ado, here is the list and some lyrics/quotations from each song!

DISCLAIMER: This is not a ‘top-list’ and the numbering doesn’t indicate any order!

1. Eye of The Tiger – Survivor

“Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past / You must fight just to keep them alive”

This song is just the perfect one for all the dreamers out here…and aren’t we all dreamers? Give it an ear, it’s the perfect energizer!

2. Hate Me Now – Nas (Ft. P. Diddy)

“Hell or the pearly gates; I was destined to come / Predicted, blame God, he blew breath in my lungs”

This is the type of song to make you keep going despite being flooded with negativity from people. So much hate around you for having done what they couldn’t/can’t do? This is the perfect anthem.

3. You Raise Me Up – Josh Groban

“You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains; / You raised me up to walk on stormy seas; / I am strong when I am on your shoulders; / You raise me up to more than I can be”

The beloved praise song for believers, if you’re one, you probably know it!

4. The World’s Greatest – R. Kelly

“I’m that star up in the sky / I’m that mountain peak up high / Hey, I made it / I’m the world’s greatest”

A good-vibes-only song to be sung as a self-appreciative anthem.

5. Awake and Alive – Skillet

“I’m at war with the world cause I / Ain’t never gonna sell my soul / I’ve already made up my mind / No matter what I can’t be bought or sold”

A surer show of being strong and steadfast in what one believes. All my Christians, this is the anthem.
